Location: Saint Meinrad Archabbey

Icon _for _webSaint Meinrad Archabbey will offer an icon painting workshop October 8-13, 2017, on the Archabbey grounds in St. Meinrad, IN. Leading the workshop will be Br. Michael Moran, CP.

For many years, people from a variety of spiritual traditions have found themselves drawn to the mysterious and prayerful images found in the icons of Eastern Christianity.

In this workshop, the participants will follow step-by-step instructions and complete an icon of the Mother of God of Peace. Each session will be conducted in a silent and prayerful manner, allowing for the focus in painting that is mindful and meditative.

No prior experience is necessary; all levels of skill are welcome. The only requirement is the ability to follow instruction and a willingness to try something new. Because participants will be using acrylic paints, an apron or old clothes will be needed for the painting sessions.

The workshop is structured so that participants may attend Mass and prayer with the monastic community each day. At the end of the workshop, the newly painted icons will be blessed.

Br. Michael professed his vows in 1974 as a brother of the Eastern Province of the Passionist Community. In 1977 he received a master's degree in theology from St. John's University in New York City. Though largely self-taught, he studied art with August Mosca, a noted Long Island artist, from 1984 to 1989. He attended The Art Students League in Manhattan in 1989.

Since then he has spent much time and private study developing his artistic talents. One of his specialties is painting icons, translating this ancient art form of the Eastern Christian Churches into contemporary terms.

His works have been exhibited since 1985 in galleries and museums, largely in Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. His icons are in many churches and private collections in the United States.

Br. Michael conducts painting classes for senior citizens in New York City. He also gives art retreats, icon painting workshops, and parish missions and retreats. His art can be seen on his website www.angelstudiostore.com.

Cost for this workshop is $1,000, which includes materials, room and meals. A nonrefundable reservation fee is required at the time of registration to pay for the cost of the materials used at the workshop.
