On the Hill 5K

On September 20, 2014, we held the first On the Hill 5K race at Saint Meinrad Archabbey. The 3.1-mile walk/run was a fundraiser for Relay for Life. Participants ranged from monks and students to co-workers, family and friends. The weather and the scenery made the race a huge success!

The On the Hill 5K event was able to donate $1,000 to Relay for Life from the participants who registered for the race. We had 76 participants complete the race, with the first runner crossing the finish line at 18 minutes and 2 seconds.

A few comments from the participants:

"I just wanted to tell you how much fun the 5k was. It was such a nice day for it. I am so happy I did it and finished. Of course it helped that my hubby and kids came to do it with me. They have already figured out that going up and down our driveway six times is equal to 3 miles - they seem to be inspired to get mom moving!"

"I wanted to thank you for asking me to run in the 5K. I needed that. Just being on the grounds, I felt the peacefulness you talk about."

"Running to me is similar to life. When you're running and someone passes you up, it's like a moment in your life where you may be set back or even at a standstill. When I have the opportunity to pass that same person or anyone in the race, it gives me a sense of hope that I am moving forward, just like in life when something good happens."

The event will be held again next September. The committee and volunteers are hoping that, with the success of this race, we will have an even larger crowd in 2015.
