On Being Catholic

Location: Archabbey Guest House and Retreat Center
Session Faculty: Fr. Vincent Tobin, OSB

What kind of people can be welcomed into the Church? The answer is simple – and uncomfortable: the same kind of people Jesus welcomed into his company. Hardly the cream of wealthy, fashionable, religiously upright society. “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened” (Mt 11:28). “Catholic” is Greek. It means “everybody welcome.” We live in a culture of escapism, anything to take our minds off the really important things, an updating of the old Roman Panem et circenses (Give the rabble something to eat and then distract them with fun).
