Using the Benedictine motto of "prayer and work" as this retreat's guide, conferences will focus on how these two elements can be integrated with one another. The goal of this integration is to foster the monastic values of stability, obedience, and conversion. Sculptural basket weaving will be used as the model for discussing monastic work; the majority of the retreat, therefore, will be spent learning this craft. The contemplative nature of basket weaving provides opportunities to pray in ways common to Benedictine monasticism. Forms of prayer that will be discussed include lectio divina, the psalms, communal/private prayer, and the horarium. All artistic skill levels are welcome to attend the retreat.
