Lectio Divina – Monastic Contemplation

Friday, July 23, 2027 - Sunday, July 25, 2027
Saint Meinrad Archabbey

Lectio divina” (sacred reading) was promoted during the pontificate of St. John Paul II as a way for Catholics to deepen their experience of God’s Word in prayer. The Latin term finds its roots in the sixth-century Rule of St. Benedict, but it has been a staple form of private prayer for monks and nuns since the early fourth century. Guigo II, a 12th-century Carthusian monk, revitalized lectio divina for a medieval audience in his short book, The Ladder of Monks. We will turn to Guigo as a guide to this form of contemplative prayer which can dispose the faithful to better experience God’s presence in the rhythm of one’s daily life.
